Thanks to the new transducer sealing made of Viton the UPX and UPB sensors are very robust against many environmental influences. In particular, they are oil resistant, unlike many other ultrasonic sensors. The black annular seal between the white transducer and the sensor housing is used for acoustic decoupling. Thus it must be of elastic material. SNT Sensortechnik AG is now able to offer this sealing in very resistant Viton material.



ATEX zone 22 is a place in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in air is not likely to occur in normal operation but if it does occur will persist for a short period only. Areas in which dust escapes from leaks and forms dust deposits are included in this category.

In zone 22 devices must be used which comply with category 2D (if conductive dust, e.g. metal dust) or 3D (if non conductive dust, e.g. grain). Its protection is based not on self protection but on tightness and shock-proofness. This protection must be verified by strike and shock tests. Furthermore the maximum possible surface temperature of the sensor has to be determined. The standards are EN 50014 and EN 50281-1-1. 

SNT Sensortechnik AG has judged and tested the UPX and UPB sensors according to directive 94/9/EC (ATEX 95). They comply to category 3D and can be used in zone 22 with non conductive dust.


These improvements are now starting to flow into the production of UPX and UPB sensors. There are no additional costs for the customer.
